joão farkas amazônia ocupada

The graphic design for this book followed editorial criteria that balanced two fundamental qualities of the work of João Farkas: the documentary purpose of a photo reportage shot over 20 years ago (the importance of which has only increased since then) and the intrinsic poetic quality of each image.

As a means to this aim, we chose to ask João to comment on the pictures that held interesting stories from a personal point of view and we inserted black pages just before or after the relevant images, determining the desired paces for the visual narrative.

Meanwhile, we proposed setting up the pages so that images would create a dialogue, both among themselves and with the book itself. For this we chose a horizontal format (a reference to the fabulous book Amazônia by Claudia Andujar Amazon and George Love) in the exact proportions of 35 mm negative, with borderless images in photojournalistic style. The placement of the photographs in positions that require the reader to turn the book proposes a more lively interaction and makes the reader active.

We included all information necessary for the reader to satisfy his curiosity about the expeditions undertaken by João at the end, as well as texts that comment on the work.
